All the ways Zack Snyder changed Jared Leto’s Joker
Leto’s character looks very different from what we saw in Suicide Squad and that will affect his role in the DC Universe.
Zack Snyder was not going to include Joker in their Snyder Cut of Justice League, Jared Leto was not even on the list of players who formed the cast and what we saw on film (created by Joss Wheedon) left no room for him, but his new / old version will change that and feature a very different criminal clown from the one we already saw.
Jared Leto became the Joker in the first Suicide Squad movie and it wasn’t what the world was expecting, tattoos were a problem for many fans of the character and the way the character was treated wasn’t exactly successful, but the actor was always open to try again and the Snyder Cut will be his opportunity to claim.
It was Snyder himself who showed us the first image of the new Joker on his social networks and the final trailer for the Snyder Cut, which will premiere on HBO Max , showed us the first images of the new character, along with an iconic phrase that began in a meme and pointing out that the director definitely included this after he created his original plan.
“We live in a society”, says Joker in the trailer, but what is really surprising is that this new version seems to have no connection, beyond Jared Leto, with what they showed us before. “The Joker is really the only thing I thought about in hindsight,” Snyder said in an interview with Vanity Fair. “But I will say that it was always my intention to bring Joker into that world.”
We know that Batman v Superman featured a very small Easter Egg that indicated that Joker had killed Robin, but Joker did not make it to Justice League and it seems that this time he will not do it completely either, but will appear only in a scene filmed after and it could belong to a Batman dream, which will at least reunite Leto’s character with Ben Affleck’s.
“The good thing about the scene is that it’s Joker talking directly to Batman about Batman,” Snyder said in that same interview. “It’s Joker analyzing Batman on who he is and what he is. That’s what I also felt the fans deserved from the DC Universe . I mean, Jared Leto’s Joker and Ben Affleck’s Batman , never really got together. I didn’t think it’s great that we get to the end of this incarnation of Batman and Joker without seeing them come together. “
What did Zack Snyder change from Jared Leto’s Joker for his Snyder Cut?
Costumes
The first big change is a complete redesign of the character’s image. Joker’s wardrobe was one of the many Suicide Squad controversies (which was certainly a creative look and an attempt to give Joker a modern personality), so Snyder gave him what appears to be a hospital gown similar to the one that Joker used in 2016 at Arkham Asylum, albeit much dirtier.
The trailer shows us a second wardrobe in which Joker appears with a SWAT vest covered with the plates of the officers he has killed, which points us to Leto’s Joker having a new mental state and philosophy, much darker than what we saw before.
Goodbye to tattoos
Joker appeared with many questionable tattoos in Suicide Squad , which was part of what took away that darkness that characterizes them, but now these tattoos seem to have disappeared, although we do not know if they are simply hidden with some makeup or if they were completely removed. The Snyder Cut isn’t necessarily going to explain why they disappeared, but it’s possible that the tattoos were simply hidden with clothing and paint, or even that the Joker used some corrosive substance to remove them.
The voice
Joker only has one line in the trailer, when he says “we live in a society …. where honor is a distant memory – isn’t that right Batman”, but that’s enough to confirm that his voice is also different from the one we hear before and that left many thinking that Leto was trying to imitate other actors instead of constructing his own version.
Joker’s voice is now more serious and different from all the previous ones, which will undoubtedly help Leto to appropriate the character and show his new dark personality.
Batman and Joker together?
One of the theories about the film is that Batman and Joker could have to work together to destroy a greater villain, which would be the first time that the characters have worked together in a live action.
The Snyder trailer shows Bruce approaching a Joker observing the Knightmare disaster, and there is a theory that the two could team up to try to stop Darkseid’s invasion, but that would mark a change in the DCEU continuity and would definitely open up. new possibilities for the character in the future.
