Amazon’s purchase of MGM should not prevent new 007 from being released in theaters
007 – No Time to Die is scheduled to open on October 8
An eventual purchase of the MGM studio by Amazon should not hinder the launch of the new James Bond film, 007 – No Time to Die, in theaters. That’s what the Deadline says. In Brazil, Daniel Craig’s last appearance as Her Majesty’s secret agent on secret service is scheduled to debut on October 8.
The fear was that an acquisition of the studio holding the British spy franchise by the company that owns Prime Video would turn the new film into an exclusive streaming product, such as Paramout properties purchased by Amazon, such as Um Príncipe em New York 2; which, according to the website, should not happen, since budgets for the distribution and dissemination of MGM’s 2021 films in cinemas would already be fixed.
Although representatives of the two companies have not commented, the rumor about negotiations between MGM and Amazon claims that the technology company’s interest has been around for some time, but has recently increased with direct negotiations between Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of Amazon Studios and Prime Video, and Kevin Ulrich, chairman of MGM and an important shareholder of the company. The offer would have a value between US $ 7 and US $ 10 billion, and other sources say that the proposal will be of US $ 9 billion.
In addition to 007: No Time to Die, MGM’s release schedule for 2021 includes the biopic Respect: The Story of Aretha Franklin (August 13, USA), the animation The Addams Family 2 (October 1, USA) , the historical drama House of Gucci (November 24, USA), with Adam Driver and Lady Gaga, an undisclosed title film by director Paul Thomas Anderson (November 26, USA) and Joe Wright’s adaptation for Cyrano (December 24, in the USA).
Originally scheduled for April 2020, Daniel Craig’s last film as James Bond was postponed to November last year and from there to April 2. Later, it moved again to October, when the United Kingdom again adopted stricter measures of social isolation. Finally, the adventure was advanced to September in countries other than the United States.
According to the synopsis of No Time to Die, James Bond (Daniel Craig) retired from being an agent, but his peace is interrupted when his old friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright), who works at the CIA, asks for his help, which puts Bond on the trail of a new villain armed with dangerous technology.
Also returning to the cast are Léa Seydoux as Madeleine, Ralph Fiennes as M, Christoph Waltz as Blofeld and Ben Whishaw as Q. Lashana Lynch also stars in the production, with Oscar winner Rami Malek bringing a new villain to life. The film is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective).
