One of the best Disney villains is back with a live action that will tell us more about her story.
“ Cruella de Vil, Cruella de Vil. It is all a horror Cruella de Vil. The spider lady might as well be. From a circus or a vaudeville ”, read the song that Roger, the main human of 101 Dalmatians , composed to refer to the evil villain who only days later would end up stealing her 15 cubs as part of a crazy plan to turn them into a coat formed from the fur of 99 Dalmatian dogs.
Cruella De Vill was a bit wacky, she was a fan of fur and had a dark personality, and all of that made her one of the best villains in Disney history . 60 years after the premiere of the animated film (1961), Cruella will have her own live action in which she will be played by Oscar winner Emma Stone.
The new film is named after Cruella and, according to Disney , portrays the early days of one of the cinema’s most notorious villains and fashion icon (though without all that puppy-coat-making stuff).
Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie (I am Tonya) and produced by Andrew Gunn (Crazy Friday), Marc Platt (Mary Poppins Returns) and Kristin Burr (Christopher Robin: An Unforgettable Reunion), with Emma Stone and Michelle Wright (Baby Driver) as executive producer. Plus, featuring a villain who is also a major figure in fashion, the costumes were created by two-time Oscar-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan , who recently worked on Mad Max: Fury Road.
Disney’s official synopsis reads as follows: Oscar winner Emma Stone (La La Land) stars in Disney’s CRUELLA , a new live-action feature film that portrays the early rebellious days of one of the most notorious villains in film and fashion. , the legendary Cruella de Vil. Set in the 70s in London and in the middle of the punk rock revolution, CRUELLAfollows a young con artist named Estella, a smart and creative girl determined to make a name for herself in fashion with her clothing designs. When she befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, together they manage to build a life on the streets of London. One day, Estella’s talent catches the eye of Baroness von Hellman, the terrifyingly elegant and sophisticated fashion legend played by two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson (The Howard Mansion, Sense and Feeling). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will see Estella embrace her wicked side and become the dissonant, edgy, and revenge-hungry Cruella.
The first trailer was finally revealed and it shows us a very different Cruella than the one we met in the movies. She is about a frustrated fashion designer who is ready to make a “statement” and show the world that there is no one like her, even if it means getting a little “psycho” (as Stone says in the video).
The first trailer also gave us a first look at the rest of the characters, such as Mark Strong and Emma Thompson , who seems to be a kind of mentor for the young Cruella, who meets for the first time with her henchmen, Horacio and Gaspar, and little by little he begins to lose his mind.
On the other hand, the final trailer lets us see a little more of the difficulties that Cruella went through and that apparently pushed her to become the villain we all know and love to hate, who wanted to make a coat out of 99’s skin. Dalmatian puppies.
Emma Stone plays Cruella, while Emma Thompson is a fashion designer who pays attention to the promising young woman who crosses her path. The film also features the performances of Mark Strong, Emily Beecham (who will appear in 1899, the new series from the creators of Dark) and Paul Walter Hauser (from Richard Jewell), who will play one of Cruella’s henchmen.
