The title of the book and the film refers to a famous Osage saying that talks about tall plants that grow too large and block the light and water of the smaller spring flowers, plus it is a metaphor for what it happened with the case.

The true story of Killers of the Flower Moon
As you can read in the book, this is a story of violence, murder, racial conflict, and money, at a time of great change for the country, where modernity threatened to end traditional cultures.
The case began when the Osages discovered oil deposits under their lands, which turned from a poor nation to a rich territory, but, for some strange reason, the government decided that they were not fit to take care of their own wealth. So he appointed his white neighbors as gatekeepers with whom they had to share the oil profits.
The oil was the most valuable resource at the time and everyone wanted a part of the cake, so the Osage began to attract the attention of the wrong people and not long before many of them began to be killed.
Being Native, the local government decided to do nothing about it, so the federal government had to step in, with a team led by J. Edgar Hoover who was out of their comfort zone and couldn’t do much to prevent more. and more victims will be added to the list of dead or affected.

The book talks about various murders , but focuses on the Burkhart family case ( DiCaprio plays Ernest Burkhart , who was a key player in the plans to take over the wealth of the Osage people , which began when they discovered the body of his daughter, Anna Brown , who had been shot in the head, followed by more murders, the relatives were poisoned and later involved in a mysterious explosion.
When it became clear that the case was out of control, Hoover sent investigator Tom White ( Jesse Plemons ) to investigate, but he had to go undercover and began recruiting local criminals to help him find answers, leading to a man named William K. Hale (Robert De Niro) became the prime suspect. Hale was a rancher who later became a Sheriff and was a key player on the crime scene.
It is said that Hale had contacts everywhere and that he was even able to cover up the poisoning cases because he had influence with the local doctors, and had threatened the neighbors so that no one would say anything. Ernest Burkhart was also Hale’s nephew and it is said that the murders connected with his family were committed in such a way that he would be the sole heir to the fortune.
Ernest eventually testified against Hale, the case was closed (with many unsolved murders, the book says there are hundreds), and that is how the FBI established itself.
