The Next Superman Will Be Black: Goodbye Henry Cavill?
Warner Bros. appears to be taking action to expand the diversity in its lines, and one of its first steps would be to finally hit the screen with a black Superman.
A black Superman? A few weeks ago, a Hollywood Reporter report revealed that Warner Bros. had refused to portray Superman’s grandfather as a man of African descent (with even Regé-Jean Page being considered for the role). In addition, he delved into the subject of Ray Fisher and his controversy in which he claimed that racist decisions were made within the company, mainly when Joss Whedon became involved in the production of Justice League.
However, now, the same Hollywood Reporter points out that Warner Bros. continues with the plans of a Superman reboot , leaving Henry Cavill behind , now introducing a black actor to play the character, which would be revolutionary and would introduce the first Superman non-European Caucasian on the big screen. For this, they will work with the Afro – descendant screenwriter Ta-Nehisi Coates. This has not been confirmed by the company, however JJ Abrams, who would be the new leader of the DC universe in the production company said a few months ago: “There is a new, powerful and moving story of Superman to tell. We couldn’t be more excited about working with Coatesto bring it to the big screen. We are grateful to the Warner Bros. team for the opportunity. ”
Superman: what we know so far
Since the rumors emerged, it was speculated that Michael B. Jordan would be the choice to play this Superman, however, the actor has denied his involvement and practically said that he would not take the role, which, according to reports, he would be faithful to the origins of the character and would not be an alternate version (like Miles Morales in Spider-man ): he will be born on Krypton and will be called Kal-El. It is also mentioned that this film will be kept separate from the rest of the Universes, including Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and the Justice League that is currently following.
The news has been met with criticism from fans, with some pointing out that it is an attempt by Warner to correct his racist actions, and others still demanding that the Snyderverse be restored. This also increased rumors that Henry Cavill will not play the character again in the movies, despite the hope that there will be a sequel to Justice League.
The best Netflix movies so far in 2021
In fact, a few days ago Warner Bros . uploaded a new 4K trailer for Joss Whedon’s version of Justice League , which is now one of the most “disliked” videos in his channel’s history.
On the other hand, the reports of the new Superman film indicate that the script would be finishing at the end of December, and that it will have the concept of a 20th century period film, presenting the hero in the past, not in the present, separating it even more from the other universes that exist.
Although there has never been a black Superman in the movies , in the comics there are Calvin Ellis and Val-Zod, both of whom are from Krypton . And, according to reports, there is no problem with introducing this concept since, if Superman is Alien, nothing determines his skin color. On the other hand, the idea of an immigrant of color arriving in the United States may take on more political overtones, particularly if the time is in that country’s complex past.
It seems that at the moment Warner will be looking for his new Superman (maybe Regé-Jean Page is a good option), and a director for this project, which joins the list of films that DC plans, including Flash, The Batman, Aquaman 2, Wonder Woman 3, Green Lantern, among others. The next release is The Suicide Squad, which arrives in August.
